The house was built in 1992 and we are planning to install a tile backsplash in the kitchen, but we don’t know what adhesive to use since we can’t figure out what the existing surface is. It’s like a very thin white layer of plastic over the existing wall and it runs up and behind the cupboards and down past the counter. So it wouldn’t be easy to remove. Does anyone have an idea what this would be called or what adhesive we could use for tiling over it?

It could be laminate, or it could be a type of rubber cove base (usually found around the walls near the floor) … and to be honest, I know it will be more work, but you NEED to take that out, or your ’tile backsplash’ will ‘come loose’ because of the ‘extra weight’ of the tile on that ‘plastic’ backsplash you have there already. Sorry, but tile is too nice to ‘risk’ by not taking that plastic stuff DOWN first …

Formica, dont put tile on it or anything else.Either remove it or go over it with a backer board.Preperation is 95%of the job,do it once,do it right.

Sounds like platic laminate. Formica is a brand name for this material, but there are other brands as well. I would not try to tile over plastic laminate. Better to do the job right the first time. Try scoring it with a sharp knife where it meets your cabinet and try to pry it off of the wall.

According to the Federal Government General Accounting Office (GAO) it’s officially called a T.P.K.B.

Actually and seriously it’s probably melamine. That was and is used for this kind of application. It’s basically plastic and any adhesive that will adhere to plastic will work.
In reading the answers I probably agree with the people that suggest removing it if you can. You could probably get away with tiling over it but it really depends on the integrity of the adhesive holding it down. Could you just cut it where it goes under the cupboards and pull the rest of it off?
