I’m replacing old laminate counter tops with nice granite, but it’s so expensive we decided to leave the back splash for another surface in our upgrade. The same laminate is on the walls behind two large areas, one behind the stove.
I was wondering, do we have to absolutely remove this very strongly glued laminate off the wall or can we tile over it for our back splash? Some of the surround is wall paper, some paint. I don’t want to wreck the wall paper areas trying to pull it off. And I’m not leaving it! UGH. Won’t match the new granite counter tops.

If its is as strongly glued as you state, then yes you can tile over the laminated section. Rough it up and wipe it off to remove the fine dust with mineral spirits. Let dry completely.. Then you can use a mastic of a strongly modified thin set. Let dry an extra day because the glue ( thin set or mastic) need extra drying time.
The wall paper must be removed and you can go right over a painted surface as long as its not flaking or greasy from normal cooking and such.

Absolutely! The first answer is very thorough and accurate. Sounds like a new backsplash will tie the new granite into freshening up the whole space! Whatever you do, consider this tile, I’ve fallen in love with it and can’t suggest it enough. Quality, beautiful, timeless stuff….
